About

Being located 32 miles from Honolulu doesn't stop the children in La'ie from enjoying themselves. This map highlights a few select fun spots the local kids enjoy. And even though I can quote my own children as saying, "I don't want to walk, it's soooooo far..." everything really is within walking distance!

Super Citizen

1) La'ie Elementary School

Almost every child featured on the site mentioned La'ie Elementary School in some way. Whether it's to play with friends, because they like their teachers, or becoming a Super Citizen, La'ie children love their school. And as a parent I couldn't be happier. My children have learned to love learning as well as play. I have first-hand experience with the care and attention the teachers and faculty give the students. The school song "Na Keiki O Laie" expresses it well,

"Kekula o La'ie,
a happy place to be,
with teachers, friends and lessons too,
and fun for you and me."
"Kekula o La'ie
a gath'ring place for youth.
To search for hidden knowledge
and seek the paths of truth"

Play at BYUH

2) Brigham Young University Hawaii

BYU-Hawaii provides many opportunities for fun. Big fields to fly kites in. Rocks, benches and stuff to climb on. Building after building full of interesting peoples and things to watch. It doesn't end there. The University itself hosts many activities for children and families to participate in. Food Fest, Culture Night, Song Fest, and BYUH sports games are favorites. Even the pool is open to the public.

Another benefit of living so close to a University that provides so much opportunity for the community to get involved, is the influence it has on our children and their outlook on learning and education. Between the elementary school and the college my children have learned that education is part of life. Going to college is likely to be the natural step for them to take as they grow older.

At the Playground

3) Playgrounds

La'ie is overrun with playgrounds! At least two at the elementary school, one by the temple, several in the Temple View Apartment complexes and a basketball court at La'ie park. Let's not even get started with the swings and slides set up at local homes!

4) Polynesian Cultural Center

Since opening in 1963 the PCC has attracted millions of tourists for its unique and authenticate portrayal of Polynesian culture. But none of that matters to our kids! What does matter are all the opportunities the PCC provides that enable families to spend more time together. A few favorites include Hula classes, Haunted Lagoon during Halloween, and Fireknife competition.

Another benefit is that children in La'ie grow up seeing young adults develope responsibility and good work ethic while working at PCC. They look up to these young adults and will learn from them. Even look forward to working at PCC themselves.

5) The Temple

Since it's dedication in November of 1919 the La'ie Temple has served as a place of spiritual worship for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. In addition, the Temple grounds offer community members a place to gather with their families for quiet, peaceful walks. The visitors center shows movies and has interactive learning kiosks set up where families can enjoy learning about Jesus Christ together.

6) La'ie Falls Trails

La'ie Falls Trail is a hidden gem on the island of O'ahu. Miles of trails provide ample opportunity for hiking, climbing, digging and generally getting muddy. The trail is a short walk from most homes in La'ie.
